there are so many businesses that hire a web designer/developer and pay the initial deposit - and then they disappear. That type of behavior gives our industry such a bad name… but some dont do it.

Great article - I would go even farther and say - there are so many businesses that hire a web designer/developer and pay the initial deposit - and then they disappear. That type of behavior gives our industry such a bad name...

Thanks for the Article!

WOW can I relate Bob! My parents actually fired ME as their tax preparer (back when I did the tax preparing and not the tax consulting) for many of the same reasons. When we are trying to trade "hours for dollars" we do tend to take too much onto our plates, don't we?

"Ultimately, you should spend your time doing what you do best - that’s where the real money is made in any business." What AWESOME (and obvious) advice!! Now for the implementation part.......:)

Hi Bob...

Another problem often encountered is a difference in interpretation of creative ideas from client to Webmaster. Knowing how to do the basics on your website is imperative so you can alter things as they come along.

Here! Here!

I totally agree that people should have control of their website. I, just like Jon, use WordPress and do my best to train my clients on how to use it (can be challenging with computer-phobic clients). But even then, so many people do know how to use it, it's not that hard to hire a kid out of college to help you manage your site, and many VAs offer this service, as well.

Bob,

Great points! I have also been one of those webmasters that you talk about... and though the client sometimes used to feel like they were held hostage, so did the webmaster! This is why I agree with you about the blog idea.

I now create most all of my websites with WordPress blogging software. I use WordPress whether the site is a blog or not. It is even a great choice for a more traditional type of site. It gives the client the power to update the site themselves. And I think it is all about empowering the client.

Once again, great information Bob. Though I don't have this problem myself because I run my own sites, this is excellent information to have.
