[Traffic Secrets] Traffic Part One: The Key Pieces Of Great Traffic

Over the next few days, I’d like to teach you a few things about traffic. Is that cool with you? It’s a question I get all the time, and one that is critical to your success online.
As a high school teacher, I was frequently asked to come up with word games to help students understand a certain piece of history. So with that in mind, here is a quick (and rough draft) version of a mental mnemonic for TRAFFIC. I imagine I could come up with another set of letters, but I’ll leave that up to you in the comments area!
Here are the 7 components of a great traffic strategy…
- Targeted – Traffic needs to be focused on the people who will be most likely to take action on what you have to offer. You can get all the “hits” you want to your website, but your visitors don’t speak your language, have no interest in buying anything unless they can win a free ipod, or are under the age of doing business with you, then what is the point? I’d rather have 100 targeted visitors a day than 10,000 random hits purchased from a vendor.
- Residual – Traffic needs to come in day in and day out. The methods you use to get traffic should allow for this to happen. Instead of one-time hits, implement traffic strategies that build long term traffic. Natural search results for your specific key words are a great result of the right types of campaigns. But even better are others in your niche who share your website with their own customers at the right time.
- Anticipating – When visitors come to your page, do they expect to find what you are showing them? Are you getting them hooked on anticipation? You should be. Everything you do has one essential purpose when it comes to traffic: take the next step. Your ad should get them to click, your headlines to read the next sentence, your benefits to buy the product, your subject line in your email to get them to open and read some more. With all your traffic, give enough to please and excite but not completely satisfy. That way, your in control of each step.
- Free – When you are starting out, and even when you are established and making big bucks, free traffic is the way to go. It’s not as fast as paid traffic, but it’s easier to make mistakes with it. Plus, most people that I know prefer to find me because of their searching, not because I bought my way in front of them. When you use Web 2.0 strategies, article marketing, etc., your traffic will be free (costing some time, of course).
- Frequent – The best traffic is repeat, frequent traffic. In other words, people who are coming back for more. Getting a first time visitor is good, but when they come back and get to know you (and like you), you’ll have even better results. So make sure you implement strategies for getting people to come back. This usually takes the form of autoresponders. But as one of my favorite people in the world (Seth Godin) would say, make something remarkable that people will want to talk about and keep in tune to.
- Increasing - A steady stream of traffic is great, but an increasing amount of traffic is even better. So make sure you implement viral strategies as well. This can take the form of a tell-a-friend script to implementing a good affiliate program of your own. This is where you should be willing to spend some money — but only paying for results. You can also outsource the submissions of your articles, videos, etc., so you can maximize your own time on tasks that can only be done by you.
- Converting - Traffic does you no good if you don’t have a quality website to convert your visitors into subscribers, customers, and then stark raving affiliates. So make sure your traffic plan includes a high converting squeeze page and sales letter combination.
I’m a bit rusty, but what do you think? Got a better word and explanation for one of the letters in TRAFFIC? Tell me your favorite below.
Over the next few days, I’ll share some specific strategies of getting more traffic. But whatever you decide to use, make sure it fits into those categories above.

p.s. By the way, if you want to learn traffic fast, watch this free video from my mastermind partner Matthew Glanfield. He gets about 10,000 hits each day, and I’d bet 90% of it is falling into the categories outlined above. Watch Matthew’s free traffic video now…

Great post Bob. For me, the A would stand for affiliates. Without my affiliates, I would not get the traffic I get now to my sites.
Free Targeted traffic is the way to go. A little SEO research can make a big difference. Remember good quality content on your website or blog will make your visitors return again and again….

P.S : Great work on your site BTW Frank. S.
I have nothing clever to add to the above and I have a post grad in education. In my defense it is Elementary.
A light bulb did go off after some pieces came together, (thanks Martin). I recently heard Tim Brocklehurst speak at the World Internet Summit UK 2007.
He casually mentioned something about a mastermind group of 6 or 7 people.
Since being back I have watched how powerful this is by the cross promoting between the group.
I know this is probably one of the specific points you will get into (JV). I was just so pleased with myself for putting it together.
And I have to say it is a great study for how powerful a mastermind group is because all of you are quite successful in your own right.
I took note of what Tim said and have my own mastermind group from the summit. We meet on Skype once a week.
Look forward to reading all of your teaching here.
Liked the post. Thanks. By the way, are you going to get the new version of “The Best Traffic Money Can’t Buy” finished? I purchased the Gold Version and still don’t have my rebrandable version of it. Thanks.
Michael
(Note from Bob: SquidooSecrets 2 is next on the project agenda, and then FreeAdReport 2… This decision was made based on the users survey which requested the other one be done first)
I like the acronym. One thing about article marketing that I discovered recently is that it you get more bang for your time invested buck by changing the article for each directory. It is a little more time-consuming on the front-end, but the links are much more secure.
Also, I like to let new articles age on my site for about a week before sending them to anyone. This ensures that my site given credit as the author by the search engines.
Glad you taught history and not math. TRAFFIC is seven letters, so there are SEVEN components to great traffic rather than six. Thanks for the extra freebie.
