Road Trip To Vegas Day Three

Lightning, wind farms, burgers, mini mountains were the order of the day yesterday – the 3rd day of our Las Vegas road trip from Leland, North Carolina.
After leaving Oklahoma City in the morning, the drive through the western half of Oklahoma and northern Texas was remarkable. Although I probably wouldn’t find it too intriguing going through it often, the vast openness of the area could not be exaggerated.
A few oil wells dotted the landscape, but all but one was stationary when we saw them. However, the huge wind-generators were spinning. I had seen some of these wind farms from the air the last time I flew (through Dallas), but seeing them up close was even more impressive.
As hunger progressively took over, we found ourselves in a relatively desolate areas. Good thing I had brought along some excellent beef and turkey jerky to tide us over until we could get to Amarillo. However, not being local, we weren’t sure what we were going to find there.
Luckily, I have my iPhone on the trip, and surprisingly a “lot of bars” along the AT&T network here. So I pulled up one of my new favorite iPhone Apps – Yelp! – and looked for a good burger joint.
The top pick among Yelpers in Amarillo (and those like me passing through) is Coyote Bluff Cafe. The reviews said basically whatever you do, don’t judge a book by its cover.
When you pull off I-40 onto Grand Street, you pass by your typical interstate and town fare – gas stations, Arby’s, etc. To get to Coyote Bluff, you drive about 3/4 miles past that until you see some kind of small junk yard or car repair place on the left. Right next door is a shack of a place – which had more cars in the gravel parking lot than the mechanic next door.
Inside you find an eclectic decor, which included wagon wheels, a bathtub full of ice and bottled beer, and street signs from New Orleans. The menus are Xeroxed yellow sheets of paper with the different types of burgers, fries, sides, etc. All the tables were full, and remained so throughout our 45 minutes there. Service was good and the wait wasn’t too long (to be seated or served).
The burgers were extraordinary, and I can definitely be thankful to the Yelpers who came before me.
After lunch, we continued our drive west toward Albuquerque. The landscape became increasingly shrubbish and jagged. There were a couple of mini-canyons that will be big one day (like in a million years).
We drove around a tremendous thunderstorm, which made for a truly awesome scene. The lightning made for an entertaining drive, and hopefully came out on the video we were shooting.
The road into Albuquerque goes up and around a mountain, and back down again. And soon we were at the Marriott Uptown, and able to unwind a bit.
A short time later, I had the chance to go meet up with a couple of my IM Success Tribe members. Meredith Eisenberg is one of the organizers for a Women in Business Meetup in ABQ, and we coordinated their meeting to happen as I was passing through. Judy Kelly was there, too, along with a handful of other women I had yet to meet.
They shared where they are in their businesses, and what kinds of confusion they currently have about using the internet to get more clients. So we spent the 2 hours getting clarity on those issues and me giving them direction on what to do first, second, etc.
We met at the Range Cafe on Wyoming Street by the way. And the Chicken Fajita Enchiladas were quite good; although the name is a bit misleading.
Anyway, after questions were exhausted and brains and bellies were full, we parted ways.
Today, we’re on our way to the Meteor Crater, maybe the Grand Canyon, and then on to Vegas. Unfortunately, Joanna’s is feeling a migraine coming along, which is perfect timing since today’s touristing is what she’s really been looking forward to for this trip.
Will be good to get to Vegas so we can stop slugging around these bags and suitcases though, that’s for sure!

p.s. There’s a really cool Twitter tele-summit going on right now I forgot to tell you about. I’m on tomorrow afternoon (don’t you love the world of technology we live in that makes that possible?), and there are several sessions today and tomorrow with other top Twitterers. It’s free but worth a lot more than that, especially if you are fairly new or simply confused about Twitter.
