Like thousands of others of people I have already worked with, you may be a victim of common misconceptions about teleseminars.

And those misconceptions, indeed myths, are costing you a lot of money because by not doing teleseminars you are putting off your own success. It’s taking you longer to create your own products, it’s harder to know what your customers want, and your list is, well… not growing nearly as quickly as you’d like.

So here are 3 myths I’d like to bust for you right now.

  1. I don’t have a product to promote on a teleseminar
  2. I don’t have a list to promote my teleseminar to
  3. Nobody knows who I am, so why would they listen to me?

Myth #1: I Don’t Have A Product To Promote On A Teleseminar

Too many people believe incorrectly that teleseminars are all about promoting a product.

In fact, a teleseminar is a great way for you to find out what product people want created. Set up a teleseminar that gets your audience to tell you their biggest concerns about a topic you know about, and voila! You have a teleseminar NOT based on promoting a product.

Of course, you can always promote somebody ELSE’s product on a teleseminar.

I bet that if you have ever listened to a teleseminar you can remember that one of the people doing the talking on the call was not the product owner. Instead, he was actually an affiliate interviewing somebody else about her product or services.

And understand this…

After you do your first teleseminar, you WILL have a product to sell on your NEXT teleseminar - the recording and transcripts of the first call!

Truth: Teleseminars don’t have to promote ANYTHING (although they can always promote you), but can result in the creation of a product in about an hour.

Myth #2: I Don’t Have A List To Promote My Teleseminar To

Did you ever see that Field of Dreams movie (the one where Kevin Costner tried to show he can actually act?). The phrase “If you build it, they will come” was repeated throughout the film.

The reality is you don’t need your own list at all to do a teleseminar. You can either do a teleseminar with 0 people on the call (I’ve done several of those myself even though I do have a list!), or you can do a teleseminar with someone else who DOES have a list.

The big secret you may have missed out on (until I reveal it to you in the next sentence) is that almost ALL of the big name marketers you know of created their huge lists of subscribers by getting someone else to promote a teleseminar call for them.

Of course, you could always buy a list of attendees through various methods, but I don’t subscribe to that school of thought unless you have a lot more money than connections.

And here’s something else to think about: I bet if you think about it, you know at least 5 other people who would be willing to be your audience for you without feeling like you were trying to “sell them something”. Even if you have no “list”, as in autoresponder database of emails, you do have a circle of impact you can rely on as you learn these skills.

And let’s not forget to mention that the reason you don’t have a list is because you don’t have a reason for somebody to subscribe! Have you heard of the term “list bait”. This term means that in order for someone to become a subscriber of yours (i.e., join your list), you must have an “ethical bribe” to give them.

A live teleseminar or the recorded MP3 is a very valuable gift to give someone in exchange for their name and email.

Truth: Teleseminars are a quick way to borrow a list from the person your interviewing and/or to attract a new list of subscribers by giving away part or all of your teleseminar.

Myth #3: Nobody Knows Who I Am, So Why Would They Listen To Me?

My mentor Paulie Sabol taught me this key fact: nobody will ever think highly of you unless you begin to think better about yourself. This is tough for many people, and was certainly the case for me.

Yet once I understood that my desire to help others was more important than my self-esteem issues, this myth was soon shattered.

The reality is if you will NEVER be “somebody” in your industry until you have a way for people to connect you with your area of expertise. This comes through writing a book (or ebook), creating some software, going on some talkshow, or…

yep, you guessed it - holding teleseminars about what you know.

My first teleseminar was about how to make websites for profit on the internet. Even though I had been doing this for 7 years already, “nobody” knew who I was.

So instead of dwelling on that, I turned the focus on interviewing somebody that people DID already know.

And a short time later, guess what happened…

People did start to know who I was, and my business grew exponentially from there.

The same can happen to you!

Truth: By leveraging the experience and “celebrity” of others in your field, no matter what your topic, you’ll become that somebody people want to listen to and learn from.

I’m sure that you may have some other misconceptions about teleseminars that are preventing you from using this powerful marketing method. I can think of at least another dozen myself.

But I’d like to hear from you what’s keeping you from using teleseminars to create products, build your list, and become better known for what you know. Post a comment below with your biggest fear, and I’ll do my best to address it in my next post.

Ultimately though, I want you to succeed in business and use teleseminars. This is simply because I know how important they have been to me and so many of the successful business people I know.
