Nothing dooms your success like thinking you can do it all yourself, that you have all the answers, or that you should do it your way so that you can be unique in the marketplace.
Trust me – I used these excuses myself for quite a long time before recognizing that it pays to have a mentor. Early on, I thought, “I have a masters degree from THE Johns Hopkins University for crying out loud – I shouldn’t need help!” But several thousand dollars later in wasted spending and bad turns opened my eyes to the truth.
I also remember it hitting me very clearly: Even Roger Federer, the world’s best tennis player of all time, hires a coach.
Sure, mentoring typically costs money, but so does any education worth pursuing. But unlike sitting in classrooms where you don’t really connect with the professor or get to ask in depth questions that pertain to YOUR issue at hand, today’s mentors are there for you (if they know what they’re doing, anyway).
They can help you see things that you are too close to observe. They can share their real experiences.
When I was a kid, being the youngest of 4 in a house where grounding was a weekly ritual, I came up with a personal philosophy:
Smart people learn from their mistakes; smarter people learn from other peoples’ mistakes.
And the same is true for hiring a business coach.
So early in 2006, I hired 4 mentors – Paulie Sabol, Donna Fox, Mike Filsaime, and Tom Beal – and paid them $500/month to teach me how to grow an internet marketing enabled business. It took me 5 months to make my first dollar from their teaching as I was working full time, and not completely committed to patiently implementing their recommendations. But after making the first few dollars, I quickly earned my first $1000 week. And it wasn’t long after when I had my first $1000 day.
In other words, taking action on what I learned from a coach returned my investment several times over – and continues to pay excellent dividends month after month.
Now here’s the part of the lesson where I let you know about my mentoring program. :)
Expecting that, right? Well, I won’t disappoint you. But first let me give you some tips on how to pick a mentor.
8 Things To Ask About Your Next Mentor
- Are they successful doing what you want to do?
- Do they know why they are successful (accidental success stories are horrible at replicating their success!)?
- Are they able to connect you with the right resources to move forward fast with an obvious path to profit?
- Do they hold you accountable to follow through with your commitments?
- Have you been successful using their existing products?
- Are current clients satisfied with their progress?
- Can they pinpoint your exact constraints and obstacles, and prescribe a solution you can implement?
- Do they allow you to ask specific questions that pertain to your needs so you can solve them fast?
These are the most important things to consider when choosing a mentor.
It was knowing the answers to these questions that I chose to be mentored by i5Gold (Paulie, Donna, Mike, Tom), Rich Schefren, and others. And even though they cost more money than I thought I could afford at the time, I couldn’t afford NOT to hire them. The profits that have resulted from taking action on what they taught me and helping steer me in the right direction made that investment better than any stock pick, real estate property pick up, or precious metal I could have spent money on instead.
So yes, I do have a mentoring program I’d like to invite you to join. It’s called my Inner Circle Coaching and Mastermind program. I’ve been running it since late 2007, and every now and then I open it up to new members.
It’s a group coaching program with…
- Live Q&A twice per month (usually at least 10 minutes per person in a “fishbowl” setting),
- an advanced strategy teleseminar or webinar once per month,
- and a social networking community where all members can help each other out, too.
All members receive up to 50% discounts on my products, and additional benefits that pay off in a short amount of time.
If I am the kind of mentor that fits the description of the 8 points above, take a closer look at what I offer for internet marketing coaching.
Regardless of your choice, I hope you will pursue mentoring as part of your business budget. Hiring a mentor will help you faster than any ebook or home study course you’d ever put your hands on.

p.s. I can help you regardless if you are just starting out, or you are wanting to take a growing business and triple your results over the next 6 months.
p.s. Only Gold Inner Circle members have the opportunity for direct coaching (1-on-1) if you want even closer mentoring. Look for the Diamond membership after becoming Gold (if any spots remain).

Hi Bob…
Having a mentor is an essential ingredient for success. Another aspect I have found to be an important characteristic of a mentor is that the mentor hasn’t forgotten what it is like to be new at the game! People can get extremely overloaded and overwhelmed.

Great article, thanks Bob!
I’ve never visited your site before but will definitely return now that I have seen what is on offer here!
Following the lead of Roger Federer is surely a wise move considering his track record of career success!

Hi Bob…
Love the post, I’ve been reading and reading everything that Rich Schefren teaches, and having a mentor by your side to guide you thru the real world of an online business is imaginable, I’m going to have a look at your coaching program sounds and looks what I’m looking for
Regards
Danny
Bob,
You hit the nail on the head with this one. So many marketers spend months and years spinning their wheels attempting to put it all together. They spend money they don’t have on programs that don’t work and hours and hours of frustration because they don’t make a dollar online.
Getting a mentor or participating in a good coaching program RIGHT FROM THE GET-GO is the best recommendation you could give to anyone new or struggling. Yes, it may cost money to get that mentoring but in the long run you’ll save all the money you’d otherwise waste on things that don’t work and start earning money much quicker!

Great recap of one should know when pitching a mentor. I’ve bookmarked you site to share with others. First time Internet or Network Marketers do know enough about the person recruiting them, and if they aren’t seeing the result they want, don’t go looking for someone that can help them. They just give up.
