From the mailbag, I received this question…
I am looking for affiliates to join where the subscriptions of new members below me pays for my subscription without paying anything myself! is that possible? – Piet Venter
I love this question because it’s remarkable how many of our typical business expenses can be turned into profit centers. Web hosting, autoresponders, teleseminar services, and most mentoring programs I’ve enrolled in all have affiliate programs so that I earn more than I pay out.
To be an effective affiliate, it is usually the case that you want to be a customer of a product if you are going to be recommending it to other people. Typically, once you have 3-4 referrals, your account is paid for. With most of my own programs, I pay customers up to 50%, and free members 20-33%.
You can join any of my affiliate programs for free from this page.
You may also want to look at what are called 2-tier affiliate programs. Sometimes they are open (you don’t have to pay) and sometimes they are closed (you have to be a customer). Either way, you get paid on your referrals purchases (usually 10-40%), and also on the referrals they bring in, too (usually 2-10%).
Examples of good affiliate programs that do this are:
- Blogi360: http://wwwblogi360.com
- Rich Schefren’s programs: http://yourstrategicprofits.com/affiliates
- MyViralSpiral: http://MVS3.com
Anything more than 2-tier has to be registered as a multi-level marketing company. The best of these that I personally use are Jerky Direct (for snacks), Ameriplan (for health care), and Kiosk (for hosting).
Hope that helps!

Good advice, Bob (as usual).
Just a clarification regarding “closed” affiliate programs, where you have to buy the product before you’re eligible to become an affiliate:
They’re ILLEGAL in almost all countries, including the USA and Canada.
The bottom line here is that requiring a personal purchase in order to be eligible for referral benefits (of any kind, not just commissions) is outlawed under most trade practices legislation.
