If you’re trying to build a steady stream of traffic on your own, you’re in for an uphill climb. You’ll need to spend a lot of time (such as on tasks like search engine optimization), a lot of money (such as on pay per click marketing) – or both.

Fortunately, there’s an easier way to get loads of traffic very quickly – and for free. All you have to do is leverage other people’s traffic and resources. Read on to discover ten ways to get other people to send you their traffic…

1. Be a Guest Blogger

Some bloggers solicit guest articles, in which case you can create a blog post and submit it for consideration. However, even those that don’t advertise accepting guest articles may be open to the idea if you give them a reason why they should.

For example, you can:

• Trade articles with the blogger (so that they get to post an article on your blog too).
• Use the blog owner’s affiliates links in your article, so that they make money when their readers buy a product.
• Offer something else attractive in trade, such as an endorsement in your newsletter.

A few years ago, a mentor of mine told me about a new social media/publishing site called Squidoo. It was unclear if the publishing model was going to pan out, but he thought it would be worth taking a look at.

Being a good student, I listened, and created several “lenses”, including one on beef jerky.

Back then, Squidoo had about 5000 “lenses”. About a month later, Squidoo was featured in the New York Times (on the front page of the technology section), and they highlighted my beef jerky lens at the top of the article. (Yeah, it was really cool!)

Squidoo absolutely blew up to become a major content-rich social site. And it’s still going strong.

Over the last few months I’m seeing a similar trend with a site called Pinterest.

I first saw it on the iPad of my girlfriend’s sister-in-law, who’s life as a flight attendant gives her random times between flights to find interesting things to pin, re-pin, and dream about.

I didn’t pay much attention to it at the time as it looks at first glance like a virtual hangout for people that love pictures of food, ridiculously fashionable shoes, and odd looking pets.

But over the last few weeks (especially after having a conversation with Dan Morris at NAMS) and playing around with it myself, I’ve come to realize how much is possible with Pinterest.

From a marketer’s perspective, there’s a lot of potential.

It’s a beautiful Sunday as I’m writing this, planning for the upcoming SIMPLE 3: Video Velocity event, and researching examples of effective affiliate programs to teach about.

Since it’s the weekend, I found myself distracting myself with a potential vacation later in the year with a couple of my favorite travel savings sites. And in the spirit of double dipping, I had a Eureka! moment!

This is one of a series of end-of-year kudos for the Best Online Marketing Tools of 2010.

Most people can get away with a simple free WordPress theme when they’re starting out. But eventually, they discover some additional functionality, cleaner code, and flexibile layouts are worth the price of investing in a premium WordPress theme.

Before I buy and use a theme, I look for a few characteristics.

My theme must be:

• Functionally sound
• Clean layout out of the box, but easy to change the colors, headers, etc.
• Easy integration of a variety of widgets and plugins
• Compatible with membership software like Digital Access Pass
• Easy adjustment of menus
• Easy dashboard for both me and virtual assistants to use.
• Sold with an affiliate program to recoup my investment in the theme (and for my customers to do the same)
• Updated regularly at minimal or no charge

Over the last year, I’ve used a number of themes on a bunch of different sites. And I’ve discovered that there is no 1 “best” theme for ALL marketing uses. So this year sees a tie:

One of the gadgets I’ve been salivating over for months is an iPad. I’ve had an original iPhone for a couple years, and I’m not one to rush out and buy a new toy just because it’s fresh off the production line.
