Your Competition Is Not Your Enemy

Tomorrow is National Pie Day in the United States.
And although that brings to mind delicious slices of warm Apple pie, with a flaky crust and vanilla bean ice cream on top, there’s a business metaphor in here as well.
Sorry to ruin your taste buds fun :)
In business, you’ll often hear people talk about getting a bigger piece of “the pie”. In the traditional marketplace, this means your slice gets bigger when you take more away from the others, i.e., your competition.
Unfortunately, this is a win-lose situation that typically results in a rush to take away from your slice, too.
And this mindset is one of the biggest mistakes I see business owners making right now. It puts you at odds with your competition.
Instead of seeing your competition as your enemy, try to choose some of them and turn them into partners or collaborators.
The traditional pie model reveals a finite market. But when you are able to use internet marketing in your business, and reach a larger audience, your slice of the pie can get bigger because the pie gets bigger.
You’ll also realize that there’s “enough to go around”, so that you can switch your mindset from win-lose pursuits to win-win opportunities with your competition.
When you do this with the right people, both of your businesses can grow much faster than you ever will chipping away at each other. Plus, your customers will enjoy their experience more because your marketing is likely to be more positive and inclusive.
Sure that may sound “froo-froo” to some; but it’s worked really well for me while the win-lose folks continue to struggle.
I encourage you to take a new look at your competition. And invite those that share your values and high level of quality to a new relationship where you can grow through multiplication instead of division.

Hey Bob,
Great article. It is so true though. It took me a long time to realize that my competition was actually my friend. It took me an even longer time to realize that building this business alone is one of the worst possible ways you could possibly go about building this business.
The sooner people can learn to leverage their “competition”, the better off they’ll be. :-)
talk soon,
Shannon Herod
PS – Speaking of which… When are we going to get on the phone and do an interview together ;-)
Hey Shannon, thanks for adding to the conversation. We’ll definitely need to get on a call soon. My schedule frees up a lot more after SIMPLE :)
Thanks for the link. really my competition is not my enemy but my friend for it helps me to buckle up and to be fast enough to do more than the one i could have done if there is no competition.
Coming up in the ‘WAHM’ ranks, we learn that very quickly! I love that about the WAHM community! I mean, heck, that’s a very big part of The Mom Pack – sharing, bartering, and learning from each other. Then I learned more about the concept from Lynn Terry – she teaches it really well.
I have seen that you are right about people’s trepidation, though. A lot of the people who are just coming into ‘this world’ through internet marketing channels are very nervous (and sometimes even more than nervous) about their competitors.
Good post, for sure, Bob!

Hi Bob,
I love your articles because they are always rich in content and very educative. We should all strive for a win win situation as our competition is not our enemy but good asset.
Thanks
John
Hi Bob
As always you explain the concept of win-win and having more of an abundance mentality very well. It also brings you to the power of association which happens when you partner with competition that is well-known in your industry.
Thanks for the advice and keep it going.
