Over the last 2 years, I’ve been putting off purchasing a top-quality microphone for my internet marketing business for two reasons: I like to “Take Action, Revise Later”, and I always thought that great microphones would cost several hundred dollars.
So I’ve been using a $45 headset from Logitech that’s been working pretty well. Except that it has these huge ear pads, and it’s kind of heavy and hot after a while.
Also, I’ve been seeing these guys on Ustream and online videos using those mics that look more like they are in a radio studio – and it just looks really cool.
Whenever I’m wondering about online video or audio, I turn to my friend Lon Naylor. He and I go way back – we met on the Butterfly Marketing forum in 2006, and finally in person in September later that year. He’s an ex-Microsoft guy and really knows his stuff. (Don’t believe, me? Check out his ScreenCastProfit.com site about using video in your marketing).
Anyway, I sent him a tweet a few days ago, asking what mic I should get.
He told me to go grab an Audio Technica USB mic from Amazon. It’s usually about $250, but he had a beat on it that it was a lot cheaper.
So i just ordered it at Amazon, and can’t wait to get it. Next time I do a Ustream show for Bob The Teacher TV, you’ll be able to see it in action.
If you have used this particular mic, I’d love to hear what you think about it. The reviews for this one at Amazon have been pretty high.

p.s. If you’re receiving a tax refund, this is the kind of investment in your business that not only makes sense, but it’s typically tax deductible, too!
Oh, and make sure to follow Lon on Twitter and get his free “Ace the Audio” training for video marketing.

Congratulations on geting a cool new USB mic. I have added it to my wish list at Amazon. Thank you for the idea. I usually spend significant amounts of time doing research prior to purchase and a review like this for a cool “tool box” item has already saved me time, I just added it to my Amazon wish List and later can just place the order without doing additional research. One question is will you use headphones like Sennheiser HD600 for the sound when you are live and taking questions?
Great article. Very useful for a newbie that’s just starting to look into the various means of marketing online.
I use the Audio Technica AT2020USB for all my clients screencasts but to just listen to audio/video on the PC the Logitech works great. I also picked up my Microphone from Amazon for only $106.10 and I have been very happy with it. In retrospect I probably also would have ordered the pop filter that they offer with it too. And I do agree with you, Lon is the Grand Master of All Things Audio.
Thanks Bob! I’m so glad you’ve made the move to “big boy” sound! LOL.
Audio Technica makes great gear. I have several of their mics in my studio cabinet and use the big brother of the 2020 (the AT3035) as my main mic for all things Camtasia and internet audio in general. But like anything else, 90% of good gear is in HOW you use it. I highly recommend that everyone gets my Ace the Audio Report and Video Tutorial (no wallet required): http://screencastprofit.com
Can’t wait to hear ya!
