Yesterday, I showed you how I was including a new opt-in form split test on the download pages of many of my sites. Already, this has resulted in an additional 10 subscribers, which is pretty cool! So this proves the point to leverage your own real estate as much as possible.
Today, I’m going to do more promotion of my new list to my existing subscribers so I can continue the transition from the messy list problem to the centralized list solution.
My action steps:
- Create and send a broadcast invitation to the new squeeze page
- Set up follow up messages in existing lists
- Use a free list-builder site (in case you have no list to start with)
Let’s get started…
Send Existing Subscribers To The New Squeeze Page
If you’re starting from scratch, you may not have the luxury of sending existing subscribers to your new list. But if you do, even if they are small lists, this is an important step.
The purpose of doing this is to filter through all the subscribers I have and see who’s really interested in what I have to teach. I’m also trying to avoid doing mass broadcasts to everyone, which has proven to have mediocre results long term.
So I’m going to write up a message that pulls from my intended audience and goals for this list that I did in Day 1. I’ll introduce the message with the admission that my homepage as changed, and why I’m giving away free membership to the new IM Success Insiders Club. I’ll also tell them about the free bonus audio, How To Become The Go To Expert.
Since I already promoted something this morning, I queue up the message to go out tomorrow instead. So I should have some initial results tomorrow, but I’ll have a better report tomorrow.
I’m also sending out this promotion to my own list so I can get more accurate stats for my homepage split test. Remember, I have 4 different versions running, and this will tell me which one is really the best. I’ll also be able to see what kind of improvement I’ll be getting on the sale of the additional 3-for-1 audio package (the IM Success Strategy Kit) that’s on the download page.
With that information, I’ll be better equipped to do Adwords campaigns or start up my affiliate program.
After writing the message, I include all of my internet marketing product sublists to send to.
Promote The List Internally Long Term
The message I’m sending out tomorrow will only go out to people who are currently on my lists. But what happens if someone joins 3 minutes later?
So for long term promotion internally, I need to create follow up messages in my other lists that will steer people over to this main list. I want to do this towards the end of the series they are currently in as a natural evolution of their status.
I take the message I’m sending as a broadcast and I shrink it down to it’s basic benefits. For these messages, I want the squeeze page video to do the work of converting them to subscribers to my new list.
I’m going to have this message sent out 5 days from the previous one.
Another way to internally promote the new list is to add a quick link in the signature of the different lists. However, I haven’t used the {!signature} tag in all my lists, so eventually I would need to add that in to the existing messages.
Regardless, by making these changes to my lists now, I’ll have an evergreen promotion of my centralized list forever.
What If You Have No List To Promote To?
Obviously the point of this 30 Day Challenge is to grow an opt-in list. So today’s steps are great if you already have lists to promote to. But what if you’re starting from scratch? (kind of a chicken and egg thing, right?)
My first info-product I ever created was on ways to get free advertising. A few of the specific tools I recommended became obsolete, but the types of tools remain effective. One of those types is the viral list builder.
These are sites that allow you to email a “downline” of members. Of course, if you want to use the free version, you need to refer some members, and get them to refer members, etc. Most downline list builders are 7-10 levels deep, so you really can have a large list to mail to.
The downside with these list builders tend to be:
- it takes a while to get a large list going
- after a while the open rate of the emails goes downhill
- most of the people on the list builders are trying to promote their businesses just like you are
- you’ll get an extra 10-20 emails a week in your inbox.
That being said, if you have more time than money, they’re good to include. And if you have more money than time, they typically offer great upgrade options that speed up the process.
Regardless, the central goal of list builders like this is to get people to your list. Don’t spend your energy trying to sell stuff, but instead give them your free gift from your squeeze page.
The list builder I’m going to use today is a new one called ViralHosts, from Frank Bauer, Colin Klinkert, and Tycho Luyben. I know Frank really well (we were original i5Gold/Butterfly Marketing pals back in the day). Here’s a picture from San Francisco 2007, with Tim Brocklehurst, Frank, Matthew Glanfield, and me (with my nifty DiscovercPanel shirt).
Because I recognize how quickly I can get my investment back with these sites, I upgraded (twice) at ViralHosts. I tested it the other day and had 64 opt-ins to this autoresponder challenge and 1 $27 sale when I emailed to about 5200 people. Since I can email to a random 6000 people every 3 days for a year, I’ll have recouped my investment within the first few weeks, perhaps faster.
Today, I’ll send an invitation to my new squeeze page and offer my How To Be The Go To Expert audio. My upsell is now part of my download page, and I should be able to see how effective that new sales process is with this group.
That’s it for today. Tomorrow, I’ll get message 6 together, and include access to the first free report they’ll get.

p.s. If you don’t have enough subscribers to promote to internally, make sure you get your account at ViralHosts. Then set a schedule for when you can email other members your free gift and link to the squeeze page. Also, use a secondary email or set up a filter so you don’t get overwhelmed by the extra 10-20 emails you get each week.
p.p.s. Also, remember to do this step in the future as you add more segmented lists to your autoresponder account. Funneling new subscribers to this central list will pay off for you in the long run, even if you’re starting from scratch.
