[Autoresponder Challenge] Day 1: Set Your Goals And Identify Your Audience

It’s the first day of the 30 Day Autoresponder Challenge, and I’m totally stoked to have you on board with me!
Over the next month, I’ll be revamping my central email list to enhance the experience of my subscribers and boosting momentum in my own business.
I’ve mapped out what I’ll be doing over the next 30 days, and each day I’ll be highlighting what I’m doing and why here on the blog.

Don’t worry – you aren’t supposed to read the tiny type! Just want to show you that we’ll be accomplishing a lot over the next month, but each day is a focused task or two that should take about 10-15 minutes. Plus, you can actually download that entire map, and use it throughout the challenge if you want to. You could also just use a piece of paper and follow along each day.
- Download the 30 Day Autoresponder Challenge Mindmap (Right Click, Save As…)
This map requires the use of Freemind (download this free mindmapping software here).
Each day, I’ll be zooming in on a particular day of the map above.
Today’s Featured Steps:
- Set goals
- Identify intended and ideal audience
- Get autoresponder (if necessary)
Setting Goals Prevents A Hodgepodge Approach To Your List Building
Before we get into the technical steps of setting up the new list, adding messages to the series, creating a new squeeze page and all that, I’m going to establish the goals and intended audience with this list.
Over the last few years, I’ve created over 100 lists, each containing between 1 and 50 messages. Sometimes I’ve failed to properly set up goals with each list, or to really think about who the readers are going to be. That’s resulted in varying results (from pretty good to mediocre or worse).
So from the start, goals and audience need to be in the forefront. And specifically, I have 3 areas for my goals.
- Business goals
- Personal life goals
- Goals for my customers/subscribers

Believing as I do in what I call the “Oxygen Mask Theory” (i.e., you can’t help others around you if you’ve already passed out), running a profitable business is at the top of the goals list.
My own business goals are centered around generating focused attention and traffic on the IM Success Library and other resources people need for internet marketing. Doing so in such a way to generate reliable revenue is an important result to achieve from this list.
For my readers (the business owners in the chart above), I want to help them enjoy their businesses more. This comes from working with the right clients, and being more productive with the right tools and strategies at the right time.
And personally, I want my new autoresponder list to help me achieve better life balance while reducing personal debt I piled up teaching for 10 years and early mistakes I made when trying to start my business.
Take a moment now to identify your own goals with your autoresponder. Be as complete and specific as you can be, but only take 5 minutes at this point. You can always revise this list of goals as you go.
I’d also recommend you use “ambitious realism” when you’re setting your goals. If you’ve never made money online, setting a goal of $5000/month within the next 90 days is unlikely. But having a list of 1000 subscribers is likely with the right steps.
Meanwhile, if you have an existing revenue generating business, then you’ll adjust your goals accordingly.
Identify Your Intended And Ideal Audience
Most people will ask you “who’s your target market”, which implies who you are “aiming at”. Besides not being too friendly, it may also be misleading.
In a perfect world, you should be creating your autoresponder for a specific type of client/customer that you love to work with. And your intent of serving them should be at the forefront.
Think about the type of customer you want to work with, and what makes them tick. Be as specific with creating this “customer avatar” as you can be.
Here’s mine:

Now it’s your turn. Map out your customer avatar, again realizing you can come back and make changes.
The most important thing here is you don’t try to be all things to all people. Yes, it could be true that “everybody needs” what you have. But you won’t appeal to the masses – nobody does. Stick to people you can relate to, who will find you credible, and the masses will follow this core group of raving fans you develop through this list.
Get Your Autoresponder Account
During Day 2, we’ll actually create the “list”. So if you don’t already have one, get your autoresponder account set up.
In the past I’ve used Constant Contact, Email Aces, and several others. As a consultant, I’ve worked with clients who were using Get Response and 1ShoppingCart.
All my experience and discussions with clients and colleagues points to Aweber as the best autoresponder for marketing your business online.
The only downside to Aweber on the surface is it’s pricing structure. When you look at it, you’ll see numbers like $300/month (don’t worry – it starts out at $19.95), and those other services will seem cheap and attractive. But most of the others limit the number of emails you can actually send out per month and charge you (Aweber doesn’t).
Others fail to include the tracking, testing, and analysis features that you’ll use to pinpoint your most profitable email campaigns (and those that are dragging you down).
Aweber simply has the best set of features for internet marketers, and I rely on it heavily for my own business. I trust it to manage over 40,000 subscribers. Plus, the broadcast to Twitter publishing feature is worth the investment alone.
And here’s a secret tip to get your first month at Aweber for $1 (if it’s still available). Go to this Aweber discount link and click “Pricing” in the menu/tab at the top. On the next page, scroll to the bottom of the page and you’ll see a banner to get your first month for $1. (take the $18 you save and put it to work in another area of your business, like web hosting, which you’ll need for Day 3 if you don’t already have it).
Coming Up Next
Tomorrow, I’ll be taking the next steps in the 30 Day Autoresponder Challenge:
- Creating the new list
- Writing the confirmation message
- Creating the web form (where they’ll enter their details)
Remember, each day is designed for 10-15 minutes of focused action to make sure we get it all done in 30 days.
After you’ve completed today’s steps, please feel free to leave comments below to let me know what your goals are, and who your intended audience is. You may want to read over what others write, too, and see if you have some similar people here to collaborate with in the future. (Feel free to link to your Twitter page!)

Looks good I follow for next thirty days so I can implement this.
Thank for the information
Great, time to learn how to use my aWeber properly – long overdue. Crossing the “t’s” and dotting the “i’s” – Thanks really looking forward to this training.
Thanks for doing this! Baby Steps R 4 me.
Seriously appreciate it.
My intended audience is fantasy writers.
Intending to launch a new product in September.
Strating at the beginning again is a great plan. Thanks for the mind map – it’s something we should all start using. Looking forward to the next 29 days.
If you use Aweber for your emails, don’t you still need to have a shopping cart to sell products and take payments? I thought 1 shopping cart included both the email and payment process. I’m a newbie so just trying to save $ if one can do both.
I use FreeMind Mind Maps and it has really helped me gather my ideas and goals.
I’ve use Aweber for couple of years now so I’m all set for this challenge.
Thanks for the awesome Mind Map.
This is exactly what I need right now. I’m so thankful that you’re offering this 30 Day Challenge!!
My goals include being in profit every month, developing sustainable traffic, giving myself more free time to spend with my wife, and creating a stable revenue stream, with a 12 month goal of 10k per month.
My ideal audience is health conscious baby boomers, English speaking, open to alternative health practices.
Beth – You do get both a shopping cart and an autoresponder with 1shoppingcart, but I’d recommend when you’re starting out you can do just as well with Paypal as your shopping cart without paying a monthly fee. 1SC has had good and bad reviews by the people I work with, but I haven’t worked with it personally other than as an affiliate. Even major players who have 1SC still use Aweber as their main autoresponder I observe.
Thanks Bob!
I been using the mind maps for a while. Thanks for providing the opportunity to look over your shoulder as you do this! I am grateful for your help and your teachings. I always learn something from you!
Be Well.
Paul.

Hi Bob,
This course couldn’t be more timely for me. I’d never bothered to think of my goals and who I was targeting. I’d always just made a list for the sake of it and targeted “everbody.” Great first step!

I was struglling with my auto-responder follow up sequence, not to sure what to do next, so this comes in just at the right time ! Thank you Bob for guiding us through the labyrinth.
All the best.

PS: I hope that the translation of google translation is acceptable.

Great idea and content thus far. I’ve been thinking of overhauling my AR setup as have one list which is fairly non-responsive so this has been rather timely. I look forward to following the challenge and charting our progress.
Good luck
Tom
Just in time, just what I need to learn about. My goal is to establish my business and get to the magic 1000 subscriber number.
Thanks, Bob for sharing your knowledge with us.
Great start. Hope to understand the autoresponder better. Also to start building my 1000 subscriber list. I want to target people in the health field offering them expertise to solve their problem.
looking forward to following this..keep it krispy. jm
I am so excited for this series and I am loving the mind maps. Since I am VERY new to mind mapping (just bought your video on the weekend), I am having fun playing around. When creating my avatar, I have realized that I am writing my blog/list to the wrong people … thank you for this simple lesson, I so needed to learn this.

Looking forward to this stuff
Identifying my target market has always been a weakness for me. I really, really, really want my market to be all encompassing, but you are the second person in a week to hit me with the ‘target audience’ concept. So… I’m off to do a little brainstorming and see if I can narrow down my target. Thanks, Bob, I’m looking forward to the next 29 days.
Peace,
Bob
Dear Bob,
Clarity leads to power. Thank you for focusing our mind on the small things that will enable us to succeed. Your first lesson is awesome as we go throught the basics. Repetition allows me to go over steps which I believed were automatic but actually skip the step altogether. Thanks for the challenge.

Thanks Bob,
I like the idea of daily to-do’s…seeing as I am so easily SNOS’d!
This will help me keep on track.
Also like the idea of having the post sent to me daily…too easy!
Thanks for that.
Have been struggling with a product & hence the audience to market to.
I have a 10 week by 2 hour course for Beginner Investors & Home Owners…first timers or start over agains, that I’d like to set up & market.
I’m a bit wary of the different expressions, product offerings etc in USA, UK NZ for this industry, but I know it can save people heaps on their mortgages & cut decades from their retirement goals if they could get their hands on this info.
This will force me to take a calculated risk wisely & get this much needed info out there, especially after the horrors of so many losing their homes & hope for a secure future.
I think I need help!
Will do the whole thing anyway & fill in the blanks later.
Thanks again for this.
Mary
Can you say I am almost exactly your target market? Too weird it was like reading my bio. Love your stuff so you must be doing something right! Great content so far! Had the same idea last week for a product so this is very timely!
Blessings!
Hi Bob,
My goal is to have a list of 500 subscribers by Jan 1 2010. My ideal intended audience is a male entrepreneur 35 to 45 years old ready to take his business to the next level.
Thanks for providing this challenge. I think it will help a lot of people get going with the daily action steps you provide.

The only problem with Aweber is that it doesn’t have API of any kind.
For more advanced features, I’m still shopping for a solution. Perhaps iContact or Vertical Response.
Do you have experience with other ESP that supports API – at least to add customers and trigger a message.
Hi Bob,
This is a great stuff. Thanks for the opportunity to go a long for the ride.
I especially appreciated seeing your own “customer avatar.” It was enlightening to see how specific and clear you are about that. You define a tight demographic, which I think is smart. I’m working on making mine as clear.
Thanks!
This is actually going to be the most difficult for me. Hopefully I’m getting closer but I DID do the mindmap of my “ideal person to work with.”
Hi I would like to be able to sell my physical products (which would be drop shipped via a contractor) through various web sites and web shops of friends, health practitioners and retail trade, without them needing to keep stock. Ideally a link or similar that could be added somehow to the web sites of interest which would then trigger a series of automated emails thanking a customer for the purchase and informing the drop shipper while optionally adding the customer to a product or offer or educational list. Could this be discussed in your 30 day challenge. I believe this is a common issue with many web shop owners that want to multiply their sales channels virtually. Thank you.
Wow, is timing great or what? I had just decided to start a new list, and I figured I needed to develop a business that provided a steady income of at least $22 a day. Then the next day, I get your email about your challenge. So I signed up and will be joining your challenge. My goal is to be generating at least a thousand dollars a month. (this is just a preliminary goal to reach in the next 3 months). My target market is people looking for online opportunities. I publish a newsletter (somewhat irregularly) about focusing your efforts and finding the true oppurtunities and avoiding the scams and time wasters. The mindmapping tool is an excellent addition and I am adding a link to it on my site. Thanks, Bob
