Get 1000 Followers On Twitter

This weekend I gave the attendees of the IM Success Workshop an inside look at how I’ve built up a following of almost 1000 people on Twitter.
More specifically, I got to show my parents how they could use it to promote their Ellicott City Maryland Bed & Breakfast for increased reservations of their awesome rooms as well as their new conference room that we used for the workshop.
In a matter of minutes, @WaysideInn was Twittering away and connecting with new people around the world.
Here’s what I taught them…
First, you need to get a Twitter account. They’re free at Twitter.com.
Second, you should get to know how to use social networking in general. For example, what should your username be? What should you put in your profile? All of this is explained for free in my Discover Social Networking Part 1.
Third, you should connect with people who have similar interests and markets as you do. For example, for my parents, they should connect with travelers, event planners, wedding planners, and other B&Bs around the world.
To do this, Twitter has a nifty search feature at the top of the page. Just type in the best keywords for your market, and see who has those terms in their profile.
On Twitter, you’ll see a Follow button next to that person’s name to the right. Click it once, and you are now following them.
The cool thing is they get an email automatically from Twitter letting them know that you are following them – with a link back to your Twitter profile so they can follow you back.
The fourth thing you need to do to get to 1000 followers on Twitter is to avoid annoying all your followers. Send out too many promo links or useless info and they’ll unfollow you fast! So don’t use every Tweet as a chance to promote your business or an affiliate link directly. Contribute to the conversation and share relevant links when it really counts.
Follow these steps and you’ll be on your way to 1000 before you know it!
p.s. For more Twitter tips, and lessons on how to use Facebook, Ning and other social networks to promote your business, head over to Discover Social Networking where you’ll find audio and print resources to
help you out.
p.p.s. If you post a comment below, please include your http://Twitter.com/username linked so we can start following you, too!

Thanks.
Great tips, Bob. I’ve been getting some followers on Twitter but focusing them and having relevant ones is very important.

I think twitter is definitely a good way to build a list, but you just have to be careful to not let it turn in to a huge time suck. If you end up following a lot of people and have a desktop twitter tool you can easily find yourself distracted and not getting any work done!

Good points Bob.
You may want to check your new theme in IE7 as it is splitting apart for me just an FYI.
This is great stuff. While I’ve been a Life and Business Development Coach for nearly 20 years, I arrived at Twitter without a clue as to how to do what when. Fortunately NicheProf and TrafficMechanic have been really helpful to me. They are, however, so advanced in social marketing that I sometimes don’t get it. Your information is exactly what I needed to get to square one.
Many thanks,

Good heads up Bob, I agree with IM Strategy it can be a time suck if you let it. But the “real time” benefits are addicting. Also yeah the blog template is distorted in IE6 Too. Looks fine in firefox. Blogi360 is a powerful blogging platform but very give and take on the visual. I have been making a shift lately to Leads and I am thinking of a way to combine CPA and sites like twitter and plurk.
Bob,
This is a great article. I’ve been Twittering for just about a month now and it’s a great way to keep in touch.
I’ve taken you up on the Discover Social Networking offer because I really need to take hold of these new technologies to get my business going better.
Thanks for allowing me to put my Twitter link.

Excellent tips Bob. Sidenote: I may visit your parents B&B “The Wayside Inn” if I’m in the Maryland area sometime.
I love Maryland and this post Bob. I’ll give their B&B a try.

Hi Bob, Great Info for beginners to find their way around Twitter, important is the balance between private posts and those with biz links….nobody wants to get the feeling youre pounding them with offers and besides that nothing to say…
Maryland is beautiful…spent my summer vacations there close to Cambridge on the Choptank River…the best crab finshing imaginable!!!

I love Twitter, and have been using it for just
under 4 months. I average at least 1 new follower
a day.
The Twitter community is made up of TechSavy
individuals that are more that willing to help those
who ask, converse about the latest and greatest, and
are generally just good people.
As far as someone claiming to be an expert in
Social networking with regards to Twitter, I
personally don’t think that anyone has mastered it,
it hasn’t been around long enough. There are people
like @BobTheTeacher, @MassControlKern, and a
select few of other marketing maniacs are helping to
bring to light Twitter, and other social networking,
social marketing, etc.
I can’t remember why or how I came across Twitter,
but I’m glad I did, and the to thosewho are helping
Shed light on such a wonderful way to connect with
different individuals from all walks of life.
It’s simply Twitteriffic!

Hi Bob,
Great article! Twitter is so Hot for Business right now, I heard of web 2.0 marketers with over a Millions Friends on Twitter. Now that is taking friendship and marketing to a new level!
Best Regards, Anteek
PS, My Twitter link is http://Twitter.com/anteek/ I would love to hear from people interested in Web 2.0 and Internet Marketing.
Good stuff for anyone new to twitter, Bob. Don’t expect anything less from you. I would only point out that following to many people all at once is frowned on by Twitter. If you do build your followers by following others you may need to go back and stop following those who didn’t choose to follow you back.
As usual, Bob your the man.
Great job, Bob—as usual. You are always a source of great information and tips whether it is for Squidoo or other social networking sites. I just found someone who did a tweet about updating her Squidoo lens and she is in the same niche as mine so now we can share some posts…. sweet tweet!

Thanks for the great comments coming in!
I’ve been following those of you who weren’t already on my radar on Twitter. Hope to see what great things you are up to.
And if you already picked up your copy of Discover Social Networking (free 101 or the 201 advanced lessons) – enjoy and let me know how it helps you out.
@MikePaetzold & others – are you still seeing the IE7 problem or did we fix it? I can’t duplicate the problem on this side.

Hi Bob
Thanks for the simple instructions. It does give one confidence to know that there is an easier way to do something as opposed to those who complicate simple matters. Newbies just need to write their username and password and make sure they follow the steps consciously, otherwise much time will be wasted in unregidtered usernames and passwords – twitter accepts partial information and then refuses the same information when one tries to redo the sign in.
A little about my online work: I am working on a proven online money making blueprint.

Thanks Bob, Twitter is absolutely a Great tool for everyone.
& thanks for all the info on your Great blog..

Thanks Bob.
Twitter is very cool. I have been paying attention to your tips.
Twitter, MySpace, Squidoo, Hubpages, all can be used if you listen
to a pro and don’t get overly promotional. Hubpages seems really strict.
I like the 140 character limit. Actually teaches you how to write more, saying less. Very civilized.
Twitter: wpat007
Hey Bob,
This is great information but you left out the most important part. You know, the one about how addicting this can be once you start participating with all the comments. This is really a great way for everyone to get involved and keep in touch and with the 140 character limit it makes you be to the point. I too enjoy your post. Keep up the good work.
Thanks,
Andre

I agree with Andre Arnett above, Bob you didn’t say how addicting Twitter is. Suddenly you have friends who can go with you anywhere. Then you find yourself convincing all your real world friends to join.

Bob, you know I adore you and think you are an awesome teacher! I took your Squidoo course and learned so much. I love Squidoo.
And, now, Twitter. I love Twitter! What a way to build relationships. I can say so much about Twitter. I am sincerely grateful for what my Twitter friends have come together to do for me.
My biggest tips about Twitter are these three things:
**Give tremendous value (way more than you receive in return);
**What you put into your relationship building on Twitter or any other platform, is directly proportionate to what you will receive in return; and finally,
**Treat the people you befriend on Twitter as if they were your walk in customers at a brick and mortar store – show them your personality and treat them with respect and a desire to continue to know them!
Thank you for the wonderful post.

Hi Bob,
Have been so busy since returning from the IM Success Conference at your parents Bed and Breakfast in Maryland. One of the tools I came away with from your teachings was to use Twitter. Yes I have had twitter for the last two months, but was not using it properly. And yes time management is one of the keys to using twitter properly.
Since leaving your conference, I have been twittering daily, at least once.
Thanks for reinforcing what you taught us during the weekend.

So which is more important niche or name recognition? I have heard people speak on using both now. Thanks very much on the targeting tips.
You can follow me at:
http://www.twitter.com/claire_koch
http://www.lazyliving.com
You can work on both at the same time. The key is to market within a niche that you can credibly claim some level of expertise. You can then continue to learn even more as you go.
When I taught history, I learned more by teaching it than I ever did just studying it, for example. I was good when I started and I became even better through honing skills and developing my own style.
Same thing goes for what you do in business. Do good things, help people, and continue to improve on how you can deliver that knowledge as it expands.
Bob

Wow this is outstanding promotion and serious from bob. Then I’m thinking about buying his product but right now I cant because I’m not good in money in my pocket. Lol~. But to who is serious about social networking buy this product from bob. I recommended.
Like a few other people who have commented here, it took me a little while to warm up to Twitter. I’ve noticed that I get several follows just after posting. I suppose that’s because all recent posts show up on the main page. Having 1,000 followers would be great. I find it difficult to keep up with all of the social networks, though. I guess I should decide which ones are most responsive for me and concentrate my efforts on those.
Whoever would like to can follow me at: http://twitter.com/marcycoate
Hi Bob,
Thank you very much for the lessons!
It is cumbersome to gt a grip on this social marketing and you are very helpful as usual. I still don’t see the whole picture, using Facebook, Stumbleupon, Squidoo and several others and get them to “work together”. Finding a good username was tricky enough but then this one should do for now.
However, I have several areas of interest and business and they are not related to each other so tweeting about one area would not make sense to all.
So maybe it is necessary to have a separate id for each area then.
I would be very interesting to see info on how to integrate the mobile phone into marketing. Sending sms and mms would be very interesting. Most people where I am have a phone with them everywhere, even in the bathroom …:)

great read. although it takes alot of skill and effort to get targeted followers in a certain field.
I noticed that for my followers to increase I have to follow a lot of people too.
So that means a 1:1 ratio between “followers” and “following” is the rule?
http://twitter.com/JeffreyPineda
Hi Jeffrey – this is not a steadfast rule at all. For your followers to increase, you need to tweet interesting things that others will want to pass along (retweet), or recommend you to others. Also, remember, don’t try to focus too much on getting a large amount of followers just for the sake of having the numbers. Try to focus instead on providing value and making connections.
